The 4,000 Characters of the Zhonghua Zijing Never Repeat

This English version was translated from the Chinese original with AI assistance. The Chinese text is authoritative.

The traditional primer Thousand Character Classic is a text of one thousand characters containing 999 different characters; by reading this mere thousand-character text thoroughly one can learn one fifth of the commonly used Chinese characters. Now another remarkable text has appeared: by learning just one rhymed text, one can recognize most commonly used Chinese characters. Professor Guo Baohua of Zhengzhou University spent more than three years composing 4,000 Chinese characters into a single rhymed text, the Zhonghua Zijing (Chinese Character Classic). The whole text has 1,000 lines and uses 4,000 characters, not one of them repeated; it covers all fields of knowledge while forming a rhymed composition. The character-learning load of six years of primary school can be completed with this one rhymed text alone.
